A tall free-falling waterfall framed by tropical vegetation on Hawaiʻi Island.
ʻAkaka Falls drops 442 feet into a stream-cut gorge near Honomū on Hawaiʻi Island. The state park’s walking loop passes through tropical vegetation to established waterfall viewpoints, including a view toward neighboring Kahuna Falls. The setting rewards a slow walk as much as the main overlook, with the changing vegetation and gorge opening up around the path.
The usual loop is 0.4 mile and starts beside the parking area, but it includes several sets of steps and is not wheelchair accessible. A short left-hand approach at the first junction leads toward the ʻAkaka viewpoint when that section is available. Check current notices before arriving: on our review date the state listed a partial trail closure from fallen trees. Nonresident entrance and parking fees apply, and the state recommends arranging payment ahead because cell reception can be limited.
On 2026-10-11 the state park notice listed a partial trail closure due to fallen trees. Check the official page before travel. Check the current notice ↗
