Amber-colored river water drops into a wooded Allegheny Mountains gorge.

Blackwater Falls takes its name from the dark amber tint of the river, which the state park attributes to tannins from hemlock and red spruce needles. The 57-foot drop sits in the Allegheny Mountains near Davis. Its broad water, dark rock and forest backdrop give it a distinctive character even when viewed from a distance.

There is more than one way to see the main waterfall. The park’s accessible Gentle Trail offers a viewing option on the opposite side from the stair-and-boardwalk approach. Select that route intentionally if steps are a concern, and consult the current park map before parking. The broader park also contains Elakala Falls and other walks, making it possible to extend the visit. Check weather and trail notices, take care on wet surfaces and keep within the designated overlooks and paths.
