Three Virginia-side overlooks reveal the Potomac River surging through its rocky channel.
Great Falls Park offers three established views of the Potomac’s broken, powerful descent. Each overlook shows a different arrangement of channels and rocks, so a short walk between them adds more than simply repeating the same photograph. All three are reached on foot from the visitor-center area.
Overlooks Two and Three have ramps and relatively flat gravel approaches. Overlook One uses wooden steps and a rocky route that can require hands for balance. Choose accordingly, and stay behind the railings. Swimming and wading are prohibited throughout Great Falls Park because the river is dangerous. The Maryland viewpoint visible across the water belongs to Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park; there is no pedestrian bridge connecting the two sides. Plan a separate drive if you want both perspectives, and check current park conditions first.
