A wide curtain of water and a chance to see a lunar rainbow in Kentucky’s forested river gorge.

Cumberland Falls pours across a broad rock lip into a boulder-lined gorge. Its width and the surrounding forest make this a different experience from a narrow mountain plunge. The state park’s trails allow a brief waterfall visit to become a longer walk along the Cumberland River, with routes ranging well beyond the main viewing area.

The best-known after-dark attraction is the moonbow, formed when moonlight refracts in waterfall mist. It is possible around a full moon when the sky and spray cooperate, but is never guaranteed. Consult the park’s moonbow calendar before planning a night visit. The park also publishes a half-mile Cumberland Falls Trail from DuPont Lodge; check whether that route and surrounding facilities are available. Use the official maps, bring a light for any permitted night outing and stay behind viewing-area barriers.
